“Nature is already, in its forms and tendencies, describing its own design. Let us interrogate the great apparition that shines so peacefully around us. Let us inquire, to what end is nature?”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Lucia Van Ert, working under the pseudonym LUZ, is a self-taught Queer, Chicana painter and florist from Northern California. ‘Agua y Luz’ encapsulates her exploration of the elements that make possible her existence, creations, and the expressions of nature which inspire them. Through her work she aims to reflect the mirrored relationships between psycho-emotional themes and forces of nature, Processes such as growth out of decay, laws of correspondence and polarity, cyclical change, seasonal themes, and even the water cycle with which we are so familiar, intricately map nuances of inter-connectivity, transformation and the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of elemental truths permeating the human experience. These and countless more inspire her wish to emphasize our capacity, as facets of nature ourselves; for ecological, individual and interpersonal restoration by directing the beams of intention through the prisms of ourselves.
